THE FRENCH ALPHABET

The following may surprise… The letters within the French Alphabet are the same as they are in the English one. The difference lies in the pronunciation.

But I know
what you are thinking, what about all those characters with funny lines on... Well these are called "Accents" and this is one of the most notable differences between written English and French.

There are
common accents for vowels. Sometimes the accents change the sound of the vowel and sometimes they do not. Examples of Accents (using "e"):

WEIRD LETTERS

Notice that the circumflex and grave accents sound exactly the same. It's not just vowels that have funny lines. You may also come across the following too (note this is not an accent)!

The cedilla
= "ç"  (Which sounds like an "S"' in English).

Another thing
to note is that if a "H" is used at the beginning of a word, it is always silent!

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE VOWELS ?

In French the vowels are the core of each word. How the vowels are grouped in the word drastically affects how the word sounds.

The other
way to change the sound of the word is with the use of accents.

HANG ON A MINUTE ! What is a “vowel” ?

This one is easy. Look at the alphabet and drop A, E, I, O, U, Y.
The rest
are the consonants.

By the wa
y, A, E, I, O, U, Y, are the Vowels (In French, Y is considered a vowel)

“DO YOU HAVE A FRENCH ACCENT?”

There are 3 types of accents:

1.
Aigu: /

2.
Grave: \

3.
Circumflex: ^

These accents
change the sounds of the vowels. Not all the accents are used with every letter; this is outlined in our example.

The letter
E is the only one phonetically affected by accents.

All the
other vowels do not change their sound. They have an accent to help simply with the reading of written French.

MORE THAN 26 SOUNDS…

An accent changes the sound of the vowel, but not the emphasis of the vowel.

In French
more sounds are created when vowels are linked together. This and the use of accents create more than 26 sounds in the French alphabet.

This is
further demonstrated below.

E SILENT

A basic rule of pronunciation in French is that if the last letter of the word is an “E” without an accent then you don't pronounce it, you simply pronounce the consonant just before.

BASICS - OTHER SOUNDS

A quick look at how placing of letters in words changes the sounds.

The sounds
of a letter in a word is sometimes determined by its position in the word.

In general
at the end of words in French the last letter is silent. There are three exceptions to this rule. These three consonants are “-C”,”-F” and “-L”. In French, double letters simply sound as one.

...Most final consonants are silent, usual exceptions to be found with the letters C, F, L, and R (the mnemonic device of the English word careful contains these letters). But even this rule has its exceptions. Yes, you are right; you don’t want to know for the moment....

LA LIAISON – LINKING WORDS

The last thing to notice for this part of the lesson is if one word finishes with an “-X”, “-S” or “-Z” and the next word starts with a vowel or an "H", you must link the words.

This is
called "la liaison". And this is what makes you think you've only heard one word when in actual fact there was six or seven!

OBJECTIVES
MYLEARNING!

At the end of lesson 20, you’ll be able to socialise simply but effectively using the simplest common expressions and following basic routines.

    HOW TO PRONOUNCE THE LIAISON

La liaison” creates a different sound when you link “D” to a vowel. It becomes a “T” sound.

    Regarding
the other consonants; it is very easy, they sound the same as the letter. The “p” will sound “p” in the liaison, the “b” will sound “b”, etc.

FRENCH JUST ALL SOUNDS THE SAME !

Have a look (and listen) at a couple of other things you will probably notice when learning French. Understand that some combinations of letters make the same sounds, and words are sometimes linked together.

      This is
"IMPORTANT" to learn in French. I don't think we can explain just quite how "IMPORTANT"' this is. Its "IMPORTANCE" is above some of the words you have already come across and shouldn't be ignored, as it is, as we say, very "IMPORTANT"'!

      It is
"IMPORTANT" to notice that the sounds in the groups all sound the exactly the same. In French this is called "LES NASALES" meaning sounds from the NOSE!
