SPEAKING IN THE FUTURE TENSE… ALREADY !

OK, so far we haven't really mentioned how you can speak in the future tense. I'm sure in English you can do this.

For
example: “I'm going” + “to buy” + something.

OBJECTIVES
MYLEARNING!

At the end of lesson 10, you’ll be able to tell a story or describe something in a simple list of points.

Need a recap? We have already covered how to...

OF COURSE…

This works with any animal that you know. In French, you'll find the same possibility; you can buy a monkey if you feel like it. You simply use the infinitive for the second verb.

HANG ON A MINUTE ! What is an “infinitive verb” ?

That's easy! Infinitive means: “not expressing tense”. The infinitive forms of the verb are those like to speak (PARLER), to be (ÊTRE), to have (AVOIR), etc. Those verbs, written like this, are not expressing any tense. There are like a raw verbs waiting for you to use them.

Whereas
in English infinitives are signalled by the presence of “to”, like, for instance, “to go”, in French, the infinitive is signalled by an ending: “-ER”, for first group, “-IR” for second Group and “-RE” or “-OIR” for the 3rd group.

RECAP...

You've been paying attention and now you'll feel more… intelligent. But… Let's recap what we said about the future in the previous bit.

In English
, You can use a present tense if you want to express a future idea or action. For example, you'll say: I am going to buy a monkey. “I am going” is present tense. And if you can do it in English, you can do it in French! But, first of all, you need to refresh the verb "to go". In French, ALLER.

THE FUTURE IS YOURS…

Now, you can express an idea in future, like buying a monkey. Whereas in English you have the -ING form (I am going), in French, you use the present tense: “je vais”. Observe that the second verb of the sentence, BUY is in infinitive, TO BUY. In English, the sentence would be:

TOP TIP: Free !

In English, when a verb follows another verb, the second one is infinitive! "I want to go to the cinema". Well, in French it's the same.

...Remember that making sentences negative in French is a bit different than in English, due to the two-part negative NE…PAS and the sometimes difficult issue of placement. NE...PAS is the first negative that we learn. But there are actually many negative used just like it....

COMPLEX NEGATIVE…

However, in French, there are other ways to use the negative. NE... and something. Let's look at these and their meanings. In all cases, where sentences are negated (aren't we clever!), the element “NE” comes before the verb… (you knew that already!).

The
first new negative we will look at is NE ... PLUS (not anymore, no longer). Note that we call this the complex negative. See the following examples:

MORE COMPLEX NEGATIVE…

The second one, is NE ... JAMAIS (not ever, never). The location of the second element (plus, jamais, rien, personne, etc.), is immediately after the verb. I know you remember it, just like PAS, in NE ...PAS.
