LES QUANTITÉS EXPRIMÉES – EXPRESSING QUANTITIES

After describing your family, you will feel the need to talk about your favourite pet. (You can't help it!). You can describe it but can you talk about the quantities of food and tenderness it needs? No?

FRENCH EXERCISES - LESSON 7
QUANTITIES: RECAP !

In a previous lesson we studied the quantities: DU, DE LA, DES, which all mean “some”. “Some” does not express any precise quantity of anything really. It's just “some” of this, “some” of that.

On
the other hand, if you want to buy very precise quantity of something (150 grams of skin for your lizard, for example), you'll have to say the precise quantity: in this case 100 grams or a bottle of, or a glass of, etc.

LISTEN & REPEAT THE DIALOGUE

- Bonjour. Vous voulez quelque chose?
- Bonjour, je voudrais du fromage, s’il vous plaît.
- Oui. Combien?
- Je voudrais cent grammes de Roquefort.
Oui. Cent grammes de Roquefort!

SOME STUFF…

If you have carefully read the previous dialogue, you'll see two different ways of expressing quantities.

The
first way is: “Vous voulez quelque chose?” (Literally is: “Do you want something?”). “Quelque chose” does not express any precise quantity of anything, it's just “some of” something.

The
answer is (second way): “je voudrais du fromage” (I'd like some cheese). Since there is no precise quantity expressed in the question, you'll answer: “I'd like some cheese”.

IT ALL ABOUT QUANTITY…

But when the shopkeeper asks: “How much?” (combien?), he is asking you to answer with a precise quantity. And you say: “Cent grammes de Roquefort”.

You
could not answer with another “some of” something, otherwise the shopkeeper would wait for you to tell him what quantity of cheese you want exactly. And you don't want to do that…

TOP TIP: Free !

In order to get it faster, read to the following tip. If you want to use a quantity which implies “de”, like: un peu de, beaucoup de, trop de, un verre de…, etc., you have to know that those phrases can't be changed. You can't drop the “de” or add “LA”, “LE”, to it.

See
the following examples:

WISE MONKEY

LISTEN & REPEAT THE SENTENCES
Un kilo de tomates
Cent grammes de chocolat en poudre
Trois morceaux de sucre
Un verre de vin rouge
Une tasse de café
Une bouteille d’eau minérale
WISE MONKEY

My dog subscribed and now he can speak fluent French! Register now!

TIP

You could not have: « Un kilo de les tomates », or « Un kilo des tomates ». Why? Because, « un kilo de » can't be changed. It's always « un kilo de + the thing you want ». The same for all of them. « Un verre de vin rouge » can't be « un verre du vin rouge ».

Last
example with water (eau):

“D’EAU” OR “DE L’EAU” ?

The first sentence: “Je voudrais de l'eau » just says : « I want some water ». No specific quantity expressed. You have to use : DE L'.

The
second sentence : « Je voudrais un verre d'eau » says : I want a glass of water.

The
quantity is expressed: a glass of water. And, remember that you can't change the phrase: “un verre de + eau”. Here you must put an apostrophe because you can't have two “e”'s facing each other.
